5 Common Makeup Mistakes You Need To Stop Making

Makeup Mistakes You're Making | My Makeup Brushes

...and how to fix them, obviously

Makeup is a form of art that takes a lot of practice and experimentation before you get it right. In your teens and twenties, you probably sat for hours in front of your mirror struggling to get it just right and still, you weren't satisfied. Sometimes your brows looked more like distant cousins than sisters, or your face looked like you went on a two week vacay but your neck says otherwise - it happens to the best of us. These are the ones you find in your #TBT pictures that are so totally cringe-worthy. What about the ones that you might still be doing ever day without even realizing? We've rounded up the top makeup fails that we've all experienced and of course, how to avoid them in the future.

Mistake: Matte Lipstick on Dry Lips

One of my biggest pet peeves is observing someones cracked, dried lips begging for some moisture. While matte lipstick is known to dry out your lips, if you start off with dry lips, well, that's just bad. If you must wear matte lipstick because you just can't live without this trend, set aside a few extra minutes to properly prep your lips.

Mistake: Over-doing Your Eyebrows

Full, bushy eyebrows are in, as they should always be, that doesn't mean you want them to stick out like a sore thumb. Remember, you still want it to look natural, so making an arch with a right angle is probably not the way to go. Keep with a light hand when you're filling in your brows. Don't overdo the lines, make them look natural by using short sweeps with a powder or gel rather than a pencil liner.

Mistake: Failing to Prep & Set

Don't skip this step! It's both before and after -- before you start putting on makeup and after you finish applying your makeup. Applying makeup to dry skin is only going to make your foundation flaky, your eyeshadow smudge and your lips look undesirable. Don't let this be you! Make sure to use a moisturizing primer to create a smooth canvas for your makeup to grip on to and protect your skin. Aside from that, if you're taking the time to apply foundation and concealer, don't let those efforts go to waste by not properly setting it all. Remember, a light dusting is all you need. Also, don't forget to spritz some setting spray so your makeup will last longer and give you the staying power you deserve.

Mistake: Not Blending Enough

When it comes to everything in makeup always keep blending. Even when you think you're done, chances are you're not. In makeup, you never want sharp lines to be anywhere; whether it be foundation application, eyeshadow, blend, blend, blend. Makeup that's not blended well, even blush, will make you look comical, even clown-like.

Mistake: Bold Eye AND Red Lip

You can't, I mean, you shouldn't play up both your eyes and lips. You either let your eyes dazzle or your lips do the talking. It has to be one or the other, not both. If you're going with a full out smoky eye look, keep your lips to a nude or neutral. If you plan on using your lips to steak the thunder, keep your eye makeup to a minimum.
